The Exumas

The Exumas are a chain of over 350 islands and cays located southeast of Nassau. Established in 1958, the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is the first marine reserve in The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean. The Exumas are also home to the famous swimming pigs, Thunderball Grotto and the Compass Cay Nurse Sharks.

The Famous Swimming Pigs

Located on Big Majors near Staniel Cay, these hungry hogs are a popular attraction. A single, factual account of how the pigs ended up on the cay does not appear to exist. Folklore and various theories claim a number of different scenarios including pirates.

Compass Cay Nurse Sharks

The marina at Compass Cay, located in one of the rare totally protected harbors in the Exumas, attracts boats of all sizes up to 180’ mega yachts. It is also home to the friendly nurse sharks that attract thousands of brave tourists for a swim.

Throughout the park you can explore the underwater magnificence of coral reefs, mangroves and seagrasses, stroll along pristine beaches, traverse several hiking trails, and observe tons of wildlife including birds, fish, turtles and iguanas.
