Q: What is an APA?

The expenses are generally estimated at 35% of the base charter fee. These prepaid expenses are called Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). The APA essentially creates a bank account for the Captain to purchase provisions, fuel, dockage, beverages, bar, and other consumables on the charterer's behalf. Any amount not used will be refunded to you at the end of the charter. If during the charter the costs have exceed the collected APA, then additional funds will be required for the outstanding bills.

Q: Is it customary to tip the crew?

Yes! The amount is totally at your discretion, with 15% - 20% of the charter fee (excluding running expenses and taxes) being standard. Many crew members are involved in the operation of your yacht, from stewardesses refreshing your cocktails, to the deckhands setting up the slide for you. While it may be tempting to leave forward-facing members a more generous tip, it’s not recommended. Remember, the crew works as a team, and it’s important to reward them as a team.

Q: What is basic charter etiquette?

Be sure to fill out your preference sheets as detailed as you can, this enables the crew to plan accordingly for your trip. Keep in mind that when you're cruising the islands there are limited places to provision so they will be sourcing everything before you arrive. Pay attention to your captain's safety briefing and be flexible when it comes to weather and your itinerary. Lastly, be respectful of your crew and do not do anything illegal - there is a zero tolerance policy for this and your charter contract can be terminated immediately if any illegal activity occurs aboard the vessel.

Q: What to pack?

Don't forget your swimsuit! You will need all necessary travel documents, regular medications, swim clothes, coverups, hat & sunglasses. Multiple pairs of shoes are unnecessary but do bring sandals and water shoes if you prefer. A lightweight sweater or jacket are recommend for the evenings.
